Connected Health and Innovative Rehabilitation (CHAIR) Laboratory

General Laboratory Description

Dr. Wong’s Connected Health and Innovative Rehabilitation (CHAIR) Lab has three key areas to optimize health and rehabilitation for individuals with neurological conditions.

  1. Develop precise assessments through the application of modern psychometric theories and innovative technologies.
  2. Develop effective interventions to maximize daily, cognitive and emotional functioning.
  3. Understand brain injury and behavioral health mechanisms underlying daily functioning problems using wireless health, neurobehavioral and patient-reported methods.

Dr. Wong also directs the Stroke Management and Rehabilitation Team (SMART) Stroke Registry, which prospectively collects data from medicine, radiology and rehabilitation on approximately 30,000 stroke patients admitted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. This provides an ideal environment for researchers and students to study optimal stroke recovery from acute care to community rehabilitation.

General Description of Student Activities

Dr. Wong uses an experiential-learning approach to help students gain clinical research experience and develop necessary skills to link research to practice. Students will have opportunities to receive training and participate in scheduling and conducting client interviews, focus groups and assessments. In addition, students may assist in training/intervention sessions, data entry, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and writing peer-reviewed articles.

MSOT students will participate in an ongoing research project, and OTD students will have the opportunity to develop a project as part of an ongoing study that meets the support and resources available in the lab. Students are expected to support other lab members as necessary and attend regular lab meetings.

Students should be comfortable working in a team environment. By the end of the final year, OTD students are mentored in the development of a journal-ready publication. MSOT students are not required to develop a manuscript but will assist other lab members to prepare parts of a manuscript on the research project in which he/she has been involved.

  • Investigating the impact of neurocognitive impairments and mental health symptoms on daily life participation among stroke survivors using ecological momentary assessments
  • Understanding recovery dynamics of depression, social support and functional status in stroke survivors after inpatient rehabilitation
  • Testing a patient engagement intervention for individuals with acquired neurological injury during inpatient rehabilitation
  • Developing a precision public health tool to understand chronic health management needs among African Americans after stroke
  • Evaluating a mindfulness-based meditation intervention to reduce post-stroke stress-related symptoms
  • Determining what types of mobile health services would be acceptable and of greatest interest to stroke survivors
  • Developing a mobile assessment and tailoring resources to individualized needs for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors
